Description

Wighill Manor Farmhouse is a house dating from around 1791, with remnants from about 1580. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and three bays. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, set within a reused late 16th-century classical surround. This doorway features a Tudor arch with an architrave and cornice, flanked by fluted Corinthian columns that have strapwork decoration at their bases, which are partially buried. These columns support an entablature with dosserets and a cornice. Above the door, there is a plaque displaying armorial bearings, with two shields in cartouches placed on the cornice. The rest of the facade is from the 18th century and later, with four-pane sash windows throughout, featuring splayed vousoirs above flat arches. The ground-floor windows are longer than those on the first floor. The end stacks are rendered. A 1926 copy of a painting of Wighill Hall from 1791 is owned by the current owners, and a note on the back indicates that the present farmhouse is located on the exact site of the 1580 hall built by Sir Robert Stapilton, which was demolished around 1791. A new hall was constructed on higher ground, and in 1811, Granville Anson Chetwynd Stapylton sold the estate to Richard Fountain Wilson.
