Description
The Church of Saint Martin is a church with early 10th century origins, although most of its structure dates from the 12th to the 16th centuries, reflecting various building phases and alterations. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a Westmorland slate roof over the chancel. The church includes a west tower, a four-bay nave with a south porch, and a two-bay chancel. The western half of the tower has collapsed. The tower has 2-light belfry windows on the north and east sides, and is topped with an embattled parapet and pinnacles.
The south porch contains a 13th century pointed door with a roll-moulded arch supported by responds with stiff-leaf capitals. A blocked 12th century round-arched south arcade now features square-headed 2-light Perpendicular windows. To the north, there is a 13th century pointed doorway in a chamfered surround. A blocked pointed arcade now contains 14th century 2-light windows with quatrefoil tracery, likely re-set from their original position in the north wall of the arcade.
Inside the chancel, there is a square-headed priests' door to the south and a 2-light decorated window to the east. The interior also features a blocked doorway in the south-east corner of the nave that incorporates 12th century zigzag and Saxon capitals. Excavations of the church have uncovered evidence of an original Saxon church on the site. At the time of the last survey, the church was in a ruinous condition.
