Description
Hipswell Mill and Millhouse is a corn mill and attached millhouse dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with ashlar coped gables and two brick gable stacks. It is two storeys high.
The north front has the mill on the right and the millhouse on the left. The mill includes a plank door on the left, a boarded two-light glazing bar sliding sash to the right, and a single-storey lean-to with another plank door. Above this, there is another boarded sliding sash. The millhouse to the left has a 20th-century doorway on the right and a boarded two-light glazing bar sliding sash on the left, with a single similar window above. The right return features a single stable doorway at the upper floor level.
On the rear south front, there is a single plank door to the mill beneath a timber lintel. The millhouse has a boarded sliding sash and a tiny window to the left, with two further boarded windows above. The rear wing has been heightened and has a flat roof.
Inside, the mill contains a large iron water wheel housed in the rear wing, along with remaining cast iron machinery at ground level, separated by a plank partition and doors. Above, there are two millstones set into the grindery floor. This mill retains a complete set of corn milling machinery.
