Description
The outbuildings to the east of Hipswell Mill are mill-related structures dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, with a 20th-century addition. They are constructed of coursed rubble stone with ashlar dressings and feature pantile and concrete tile roofs. The buildings are two storeys and single storey in height.
The east front includes a pair of stables on the left, which have haylofts above. These stables feature two stable doors with ashlar lintels and two small shuttered openings for the haylofts above. To the left, there is a set-back double privy or earth closet with a small outbuilding beyond it. On the right, a lower cartshed with a pantile roof has double plank doors and a small shuttered opening leading to a pigsty.
The south wall displays five symmetrically arranged ground floor doorways, with a central wide opening flanked by single narrow openings, and wider openings beyond, all covered by a late 20th-century temporary byre. These outbuildings are included for their group value as an important functional element of the Hipswell Mill group.
