Description

The courthouse, located to the east of Colburn Hall, is a Grade I listed building dating from around 1300. It is constructed of rubble with a pantile roof, featuring stone slates at the eaves. The building has two storeys and five internal bays, with quoins at the corners. The main entrance to the first floor is on the east side, accessed by external stone steps leading up to a board door set in a recess. There is also a board door leading to the undercroft.

The west elevation includes a buttress at the left end, a board sliding door to the undercroft towards the left, and a first-floor board door with quoined jambs to the right. The south gable end features a first-floor window with two trefoiled lights divided by a shaft that has an Early English capital, along with tracery in the head that includes a cusped quatrefoil and a label. Above this window is a square opening that has been blocked with brick, possibly indicating a former dovecote.

On the north gable end, there are two single-light windows for the undercroft, and on the first floor, there is a single trefoiled light located at a lower level than the window on the south end. Inside the undercroft, there is a segmental rear arch leading to the eastern door and deeply-splayed reveals for the north windows. In the upper chamber, the eastern wall contains a fireplace with a moulded segmental arch, and the end windows are splayed with chamfered segmental rear arches. The roof features collared principal rafter trusses with trenched purlins, wall plate, and common rafters, which are of 17th-century type and have been partially renewed.
