Description
This former cottage, located to the west of Halsteads, has been converted into stables and is now used as a store. It dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of slobbered rubble with stone dressings and features a stone slate roof. It has a two-cell plan and is two storeys high with a double front.
The central entrance has a moulded surround and a 19th-century plank stable door. On the ground floor, there are two flanking 2-light double chamfered mullioned windows with sashes that do not have glazing bars. There are likely two similar windows on the upper floor, although they are now obscured by vegetation.
At the rear of the building is a mid-19th-century lean-to that incorporates a reused late 17th-century entrance. This entrance features a moulded surround and a decorated lintel inscribed with the phrase: "AB ALIO SPERES ALTERI QUOD FECERIS 16 AF 70," where "AF" refers to the Foxcroft family. It is believed that this entrance surround was removed from Halsteads during the early 19th-century alterations.
