Description
The Druids' Temple is a folly built around 1800 for William Danby of Swinton Castle. Constructed from sandstone, it is designed to resemble a Druids' temple and consists of two circular shapes featuring monoliths and trilithens. The first large circle, shaped like a vesica piscis, includes four monoliths and a central monolith that serves as a phallic symbol of ancient reverence. Behind three stones that form a screen, there is an antechamber leading to a circular chamber containing a Sacrificial Stone, and beyond this is a tomb. On the hill above the temple stands a tall column of stones that symbolizes a deity and the twelve signs of the zodiac.
