Description
The Mother Shipton Inn is a 17th-century inn that has undergone some alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of stone and features a stone slate roof. The building consists of a two-storey, two-bay main range, with a two-storey, one-bay addition on the left and a further one-storey block with attics to the far left.
The main range has a 20th-century glazed door located in an added gabled porch, with two 20th-century casement windows on each floor. It also features a first-floor band, a shaped kneeler, and gable coping, along with a large central ridge stack. The one-bay extension has similar windows but a lower roof pitch and a left gable stack. The two-bay extension, which was likely originally a stable with a hay loft above, includes two 20th-century windows, lower eaves, and ridge; there are steps to the loft space with a boarded door on the left return.
The main range is associated with the nearby cave and dropping well along the river bank to the west, and the building served as a gatehouse to the Long Walk for a period of time.
