Palladian Bridge Approximately 90 Metres North-East Of Scampston Hall

The Palladian Bridge, located approximately 90 metres north-east of Scampston Hall, is a bridge and garden pavilion built around 1775 by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown for Sir William St Quintin, 5th Baronet. The bridge is constructed of tooled sandstone, while the pavilion is made of orange-red brick in stretcher bond, featuring timber columns, cast-iron railings, and a slate roof.

The bridge has a triple-span design that carries a T-shaped, 3-bay pavilion over the beck at the rear. It features segmental arches made of voussoirs between pilaster piers, and a moulded cornice that breaks forward over the pilasters, forming the edge of the pavilion floor. The pavilion is adorned with pairs of Ionic columns that sit atop the bridge pilasters, and it includes a frieze decorated with wheatear festoons and drops interrupted by paterae above the columns.

A moulded dentilled cornice supports a pediment over the central bay, which is topped with a duck acroterion. The balustrade consists of square-section railings interspersed with rosettes. The rear of the pavilion is one storey high and has three bays, with the centre bay projecting on a shallow segmental arch. This central bay features a lunette window in a recessed blind arch above an impost band that returns at each end. There is a door with six raised and fielded panels on the right side, while the flanking bays are blank. The centre bay has a raised dentilled eaves band, and the side bays have boxed eaves. The roof of the centre bay is hipped.
