Description
The stable block to the west of Conyngham Hall is a late 18th-century building that was likely constructed for Ellen, Countess of Conyngham. Originally serving as stables and a coach house, it has since been converted into offices, a cottage, and a garage. The structure is made of coursed squared gritstone and features a Westmorland slate roof.
This single-storey block has a central courtyard and a two-storey rear range. The main range, located to the northeast, consists of five bays, with the central bay projecting slightly and featuring a carriage arch with a trefoil head set within a triangular pediment that has ashlar coping. The flanking bays include flat-arched square recesses and a moulded eaves cornice, topped with a central ridge stack.
On the rear range, the center and end bays have arched recesses that rise through two storeys on the southwest side. The end bays contain board double doors with a six-pane fixed window above. The central three bays have four-pane windows on the ground floor and six-pane windows on the first floor. The left range has 20th-century office windows facing the courtyard, while the right range is a cottage featuring board doors, sliding sash windows, and two wooden outshuts on the northwest side. Inside, the main range still retains its stalls.
