Description

Tenter Lodge is a house, now divided into two dwellings, built in the early 19th century for William Ibbetson. It is constructed of red brick in random bond with a Westmorland slate roof. The building was originally conceived as a five-bay composition with a single-bay square tower to the right, but has been reconfigured as a four-bay house on the left and a two-bay house on the right. It is built into the hillside and stands mostly two storeys high.

The main front of Tenter Lodge (left section) features a half-glazed door with fanlight set within a reeded pilastered surround with panelled reveals and a deep cornice. This is flanked by 16-pane sashes in flush frames. To the right are a 2-light casement window and further 16-pane sashes at first-floor level. All windows have segmental heads. The roof is hipped with a brick ridge stack.

The left return incorporates a central glazed door with a segment-headed overlight, flanked by segment-headed 16-pane sashes at first-floor level. A two-storey tower projects beyond to the left, featuring a glazing bar sash below and a pointed window above, both with castellated parapets.

No. 3 Waterside (right section) adjoins the main front and includes a glazed door and 2-light side sliding sash to the ground floor of its left bay, with a 16-pane sash above. All are set beneath segmental heads. An advanced three-storey tower to the right has a segment-headed glazed door and 2-light side sliding sash at ground level, positioned below those of the main house. Glazed doors opening to a balcony and a 2-light side sliding sash occupy the middle floor, with a similar sash at the level above. This section also features castellated parapets.

The interior of Tenter Lodge displays moulded wall panels, fluted columns, and a marble fireplace. The entrance hall features a reeded doorcase with paterae. A stick baluster staircase with ramped handrail and scrolled tread end ascends the space. A C18 semi-circular headed cupboard niche with shaped shelves is set to one side. The left ground-floor room contains segmental-headed niches with inserted relief panels and a columned fireplace. The upper sitting room features an Adam-style fireplace flanked by glazed semi-circular headed cupboards and an elaborate doorcase. The staircase hall, lower and upper sitting rooms all retain moulded wall panels and moulded cornices.

The building incorporates later 19th-century additions and alterations. William Ibbetson operated the dye works at the base of Gallons Steps.
