Description

Milton House is a house built in 1635, as indicated by a datestone. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The house is two storeys high and has three bays. It features quoins and a cyma moulded dripstone to the ground floor. The gables are coped with kneelers bearing elaborate finials. The ground floor has double-chamfered stone mullion windows of 5 and 6 lights (the 6-light window having a double central mullion), with a modern 2-light chamfered stone mullion window where a fireplace formerly stood. The first floor windows are similar, with 4 lights (with a king mullion), 5 lights, and 2 lights. There are three chimneys. A smaller range is set back to the right side, with a 3-light flush square mullion window and a moulded surround to the door. The lintel above the door is inscribed "1635 IEMS," and the initials "ES" appear on one of the finials. Inside, the main room has a large fireplace with a segmental head and a cyma surround, supporting the main ceiling beam. Some of the beams have Victorian stencilling. Upstairs, there is a door with two arched panels, which may be original. The roof structure incorporates an arch-braced collar beam truss, heavily pegged.
