Description
Nos 98 and 100 on High Street are a pair of houses dating from the early to mid 19th century. They are constructed of coursed squared gritstone and topped with a Westmorland slate roof. The buildings rise to three storeys and feature four first-floor windows. The entrance consists of a later six-panel recessed door with an overlight, framed by a narrow wood architrave and an entablature adorned with triglyphs and a moulded cornice. There is a blind doorway to the left and a blocked doorway to the right. The windows are sashes with margin lights, set in flush wood architraves with projecting sills and incised lintels. Stone gutter brackets are present, and there is a central brick ridge stack. On the right return, there is a 20th-century door flanked by bay windows. Above the second-floor level, stone corbels support an applied timber framework that holds three windows: two side-sliding and one vertical sash, all with glazing bars. An 1851 OS map indicates that this building was originally called Prospect House and housed a Ladies Boarding School at the rear. The current entrance is shown on the map, and the building has been extended by two bays along the road to the southeast.
