Description

Knaresborough House is a late 18th-century town house that now serves as council offices. It is built from coursed squared limestone and features a stone slate roof. The structure is three stories tall with a five-bay square central block, flanked by a single-storey, two-bay wing on the left and a two-storey, two-bay wing on the right. The central entrance has a panelled door with a fanlight and a portico supported by Tuscan columns, which features a fluted frieze, dentilled cornice, and a triangular pediment. The windows throughout the first and second floors are sashes with glazing bars, projecting sills, and flat arches, while the third floor has six-pane sashes. A balustraded band runs at first-floor level, and there is a moulded eaves cornice, a hipped roof, and wide lateral stacks. The rear of the house has flanking wings that are single-storey, with windows and a balustrade similar to the front. The house became the property of Knaresborough Council in 1951.

Inside, the entrance hall features two pairs of columns with plain beaded capitals and six-panel doors with a tiled floor. To the left, there is a wide cantilevered staircase with two lights and a plain balustrade. The Venetian landing window contains painted glass with monograms and coats of arms. The Council Chamber, located at the center of the ground floor rear rooms, has a plaster ceiling frieze decorated with triglyphs and lamps, along with a classical style fireplace made of carved wood.
