Description
The Wakeman's House is a building from the 16th or 17th century, constructed with a timber frame that was once plastered, and features a stone slate roof. It stands two storeys high with attics and has a two-bay front. The house has canted oriel windows on both floors; the first-floor oriels have hipped roofs, while the ground-floor oriels share a continuous pent-roof over both and the door between them, which is a contemporary design. There is also a casement window in the gable end at attic level.
Inside, the staircase is notable for its unique balusters, which are cut flat with a pattern of discs and oblongs, complemented by a simply moulded handrail.
Historically, this house is traditionally associated with Hugh Ripley, who was the last Wakeman and the first mayor of Ripon following the revised constitution of 1604.
