Description
The Old Paper Mill is a house and mill building located on Boroughbridge Road in Bishop Monkton. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and has had some alterations in the 20th century. The structure is built of brick in Flemish bond and features a stone slate roof.
To the left, there is a three-storey, three-bay house with a central six-panel door that has an overlight, set within a wooden doorcase with attached columns and a corniced pediment. The house has sash windows with glazing bars in flush wood architraves, stone sills, and cambered header brick arches on the flanking and first floors. The second floor features a nine-pane sash window on the left and two 20th-century casements on the right. The building has end stacks.
To the right is the industrial range, which has a board door at the far right and three windows to the left, one of which is a sash with glazing bars in a flush wood frame. The remaining ground-floor and three first-floor windows are 20th-century casements. The upper two floors of the industrial section have three 18th-century brick columns, which are infilled with 20th-century brickwork, indicating that there were originally large openings on these floors.
