Description
Sheriff Hutton Castle is a ruinous castle that began construction in 1382 by John, Lord Neville, with a 15th-century gatehouse added later. It is built from sandstone and limestone rubble and has a rectangular plan featuring four corner towers and the remains of curtain walls that enclose an inner court measuring 120 by 100 feet. The gatehouse is located to the north of the southeastern tower, with a poorly aligned intermediate tower to the north. Substantial remains of the corner towers still stand, reaching up to four storeys in some areas. Some trefoil-headed cusped windows and several fireplaces are still visible. The gatehouse displays four shields in relief above the first-floor window opening. Inside, there are remnants of tunnel vaulting on the ground floor and in the cellars, with the vaulting in the northeastern tower being particularly well-preserved.
