Description
Standard House is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built in the early to mid-19th century and underwent some alterations in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red and brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern and has a roof made of Westmorland slate. It is designed in the Regency villa style with an L-shaped plan and a rear left wing. The house has two storeys and three bays.
The central entrance features a door with six fielded panels and a fanlight, framed by a doorcase with Doric half-columns, a frieze, and a cornice. On the ground floor, there are late 19th-century square bay windows with hipped roofs that extend beyond the first-floor band. The first floor has four-pane sash windows with flat arches. The roof is hipped, and there are end eaves stacks.
The name "Standard House" commemorates the Battle of the Standard, which occurred on Cowton Moor, three miles north of Northallerton, on 22 October 1138, where England emerged victorious against Scotland. The building is included for its group value.
