Description

The National School for Boys is a school building, now used as offices, constructed in 1814. It features ashlar stonework and a Westmorland slate roof. The structure is single storey with two sections: the main block has ten bays and a lower three-bay range to the left, along with a 20th-century addition to the east.

The north front of the main block includes 24-pane sash windows with projecting sills and shouldered wedge lintels, topped by a hipped roof. Above the eaves, there is a central stone tablet inscribed 'NATIONAL SCHOOL ERECTED 1814' adorned with scroll decoration. The lower range originally had an entrance on the right, now fitted with a 20th-century iron gate, and features modern windows. The rear of the main block has windows similar to those at the front, while the lower range contains sash windows with glazing bars.

Inside, a floor has been inserted into the main range. This school was the first in the district established by the National Society for the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church, which was founded in 1811, and it was designed to accommodate 200 boys. An 1851 map indicates that the building originally had a large hall on the west side and about five small rooms along the east side.
