Description
The Moat Cafe, originally a warehouse or outbuilding, is now a cafe with an attached wall. It dates from the 17th to 18th century and underwent restoration in the 20th century. The building is rendered with a Westmorland slate roof, featuring two storeys and an attic, and consists of one by two bays. The entrance is located in the south gable end, which has a glazed door and a six-pane cafe window to the left. On the first floor, there is a central side-sliding sash window with glazing bars, enhanced by an additional four panes. The second floor has a central three-light side-sliding sash window with glazing bars. A stub of a chimney is present at the north gable end.
On the left return, there are two four-pane casements on the ground floor, with a large panelled signboard above. The east side features a long window with small panes below the eaves, which is now painted over. The west side has three windows that are covered by hoarding. There is a single-storey addition to the north that is not of special interest.
Inside, the ground and first floors have crude joists, and there is a round-arched fireplace against the north wall on the first floor. The second floor reveals two visible roof trusses, likely from the 18th century. The wall to the right is made of limestone, approximately two metres high and six metres long, connecting to the southwest corner of number 1 Castlegate. It has flat coping and two 20th-century doors that provide access to the rear of number 1. This cafe is remembered as an outbuilding to number 1 Castlegate and was probably used as a stable. Its height suggests it may have originally been built as a warehouse or small factory.
