Description

This early 19th-century house or small factory, now a shop, is located on Castlegate in Knaresborough. The building is constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a Westmorland slate roof. It stands three stories high and has three windows on the first floor. The alignment of the brickwork changes to follow the curve of the road. The central section features double glazed doors and a plate-glass shop window to the left, all within a 20th-century surround. To the right is a partially blocked window, which illuminates a half-cellar and contains six panes under an incised wedge lintel. The first and second floors have 16-pane side-sliding sash windows with channelled wedge lintels and shallow projecting sills, which have been restored. The roof is hipped, with a stack across the ridge to the left. It is possible that this building was originally a factory block or warehouse connected to the properties at numbers 2 and 4 Castlegate.
