Description
The Nidd Viaduct over the River Nidd is a railway viaduct built in the mid-19th century. Constructed from gritstone and ashlar, it features seven round arches that support the track across a deep gorge, with three of the arches spanning the river. The structure includes plinths and rusticated quoins on the piers. The arches are made of large voussoirs, enhanced by a projecting moulded band at the impost level and a roll moulding and band at track level. The edge-tooled ashlar parapet has flat coping, and the end piers rise as projecting copings. The inner faces of the piers are adorned with rows of massive projecting blocks about halfway up, which contribute to the overall sense of strength and solidity. The viaduct was part of the North East Railway Line, established by the North Eastern Railway Company in 1854, and the line was closed in 1964.
