Description
The Tolbooth, located at 72 and 74 High Street and including Nos 9, 9A, and 11 Sheep Street, is an 18th-century building. It is constructed of stone rubble and ashlar and stands two storeys tall. The ground floor features three windows and two doors arranged alternately within an arcade of five arches, which have moulded archivolts supported by pilasters. The ground floor also has flush quoins and a broad string course between the storeys.
On the upper storey, there are projecting long and short quoins, five long windows with plain reveals, and an entablature at the eaves that is supported by pilasters, one positioned between each pair of windows. These pilasters have moulded bases and vertically fluted caps. The frieze of the entablature is decorated with a series of vertical flutes, with paterae located above each window and each pilaster. The gable copings are adorned with springers.
