Description

This is a row of three-story houses dating from around 1820 to 1830, located on Castle Road. The houses are built of red brick with yellow brick headers. They have low-pitched gable-end slate roofs, with a particularly prominent moulded eaves cornice on number 90.

Each house originally had two windows, but number 90 features superimposed canted bays on the first and second floors, while number 98 has a three-story canted bay to the left of the front. Pilaster frames, moulded cornices, and shallow aprons are incorporated into the design. The glazing bars are intact in the sash windows of number 92. There are blind windows above the doors of numbers 94 and 96. All windows are topped with flat stucco arches.

The ground floor of number 90 includes a three-light shop window within a rectangular bay, flanked by shop and house doors set in pilaster frames and featuring an entablature. Numbers 92 has pilasters with two flutes framing the door, with a broken entablature and an open pediment hood above a modern door and semi-circular fanlight. The other entrances have altered doors and rectangular fanlights within pilaster frames, topped with projecting cornices.

The houses are recognised for their group value, contributing to the character of the area.
