Description
Footbridge. Around 1854, restored around 1930. Made of rusticated limestone ashlar, it features a single span across the road with a second arch built into the slope of the bank. A third arch that formerly led down into the Abbey precinct has been demolished. The bridge has a stepped parapet, which was rebuilt at the top around 1930. It was constructed following a Royal Proclamation issued on June 15, 1854, that forbade the wearing of Catholic vestments and ornaments in public. The bridge was designed to connect the abbey with the cemetery on Ampleforth Bank.
