Description
Ridding Lane Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid to late 17th century, with alterations from the 18th and late 19th centuries. It features slobbered rubble stone dressings and a stone slate roof, with a late 19th century entrance front. The building is two storeys high and double fronted. The reused 17th century entrance has a moulded surround that has been heightened to accommodate a fanlight, and a decorated lintel inscribed with the year 1664 and the initials R H (for Richard Hall), along with a hoodmould.
The rear of the farmhouse has two storeys and three bays. The late 17th century entrance is located to the right of centre and has a moulded surround with a segmental head. To the right, there is a ground-floor early 18th century former three-light window with a moulded surround, although the mullions are now missing. To the left is a similar ground-floor window, but it is a four-light window with flat-faced mullions; both have 20th century casements. The left-hand bay features one late 19th century window on each storey, which are sashes with glazing bars.
Above the door, there is a 17th century chamfered stair window that was originally a three-light window, but the right-hand light is now blocked and the left-hand mullion is missing; it has a 20th century casement. To the right on the upper floor is a 17th century three-light double chamfered mullioned window with 20th century casements, and to the left are the remains of a heightened 18th century three-light window with missing mullions; this also has 20th century casements. The farmhouse features gable-end ridge stacks and a ridge stack to the right of centre. The interior is reputed to contain a fireplace inscribed with 'W X M 692 Honi Soit qui mal y pense'.
