Description
The gateway located approximately 3 metres south of Low Lodge is a Grade II listed structure from the late 18th century, built for the Dundas family of Aske Hall, likely designed by John Carr of York. It features sandstone ashlar construction and wrought-iron gates. The inner main gate piers, which flank the carriage drive gates, are connected by screen walls that include pedestrian gates leading to smaller terminating gate piers. The inner gate piers are square in plan, with chamfered rusticated quoining and vermiculation on the quoins, square bases, cornices, and blocking adorned with festoons and pyramidal caps. The outer gate piers are also square in plan, featuring similar chamfered rusticated quoining, square bases, cornices, and pyramidal caps. The screen walls have plinths, round-arched openings, and entablatures that align with the cornices of the piers. The gates, which may be of a later date, have square-section bars topped with spear finials and an ogee profile along the top.
