Description
The wall and gate piers linking the Chapel range with the Coach-house were built around 1763 by John Carr for Sir Lawrence Dundas. Constructed from ashlar sandstone, the wall features a plinth in its lower sections and interval piers, all topped with plain coping. The wall curves in a quadrant towards the chapel range and includes a trough on the forecourt side, which was once supplied with water from a pipe that emerges from a carved lion mask.
At the entrance to the chapel forecourt, there are two piers with bases, chamfered rusticated stonework, and panelled pedestals above the coping, adorned with a classical cornice and 19th-century finials shaped like spheres set in squares. Similarly, the entrance to the coach-house forecourt has two piers that also feature bases, a cornice band, and 19th-century finials of the same design.
