Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed building with origins dating back to the 12th century, although the chancel is likely from the 16th century. It underwent significant alterations in 1875. The church is constructed of ashlar and coursed squared stone, topped with graduated stone slate and Welsh slate roofs.

The nave features two bays and includes a south porch and a lower chancel with a north vestry. On the west side, there is an offset diagonal buttress and a rough cast plain gabled porch with a pointed-arched doorway. To the right, a 19th-century two-light pointed-arched window with cusped tracery and a hoodmould is present, along with two similar windows on the north side. A three-light pointed west window from the 19th century is also located here. The building has stone copings and a gabled offset bellcote with a pointed-arched opening facing west.

In the chancel, there is a blocked priest's doorway with a four-centred arched head to the left and a twin lancet window from the 16th century to the right. The east window is a three-light design with pointed-arched, chamfered lights beneath a flat head, and it also features stone coping. The 20th-century north vestry includes mullioned windows.

Inside, the chancel arch dates back to the 12th century and consists of two orders of nook-shafts. One of the shafts is decorated with lozenges and includes a figure of a man, while the capitals feature one with scallops and a dragon, and another with free volutes and scrolls.
