Description
The Church of St Oswald is a Grade II* listed building located on Main Street in West Rounton. Originally built in the 12th century, it was almost completely rebuilt in 1860 in the Norman style by architect Pritchett. The church features ashlar, coursed squared stone, and Welsh slate roofs.
The nave consists of three bays and includes a south porch and a lower chancel with a north vestry. The south side has a central gabled porch in the Norman style, featuring a board door with the original 12th-century doorway, which has one order of nook-shafts and capitals adorned with plait and volutes, topped by a zigzag moulded arch. All windows are designed in the Norman style, showcasing incised zigzag work on their round-arched heads and hoodmoulds. The west window is slightly more elaborate, featuring nook-shafts, impost bands, and a moulded arch, with a circular window above it. The church has stone coping and an offset gabled bellcote with double-arched openings.
The chancel is one bay long, with an east window that is also in the Norman style, featuring one order of nook-shafts and stone coping with a ridge cross. Inside, the chancel arch dates back to the 12th century and includes one order of nook-shafts with scalloped capitals and a stepped arch that displays extensive zigzagging. The font is from the 12th century and has a 19th-century plinth and round column, with a round bowl that features carvings of a large bearded face, a centaur shooting an arrow, and two affronted beasts sharing a human head. The east window, dating from the 19th century, includes nook-shafts and a moulded arch.
