Description
The Old School is a school building, dating to 1876 and designed by Philip Webb for Sir I Lowthian Bell. It has since been altered and is now a private dwelling. The building is constructed of brick with sandstone ashlar dressings, although much of the brickwork has been pebble-dashed. It has a pantiled roof and a T-shaped plan. It is one and a half storeys high, with two bays to each gable end. The central gable projects forwards, and narrow bays on either side are brought forward under a pent roof to a one-storey height. Most of the sash windows have been replaced, with 16-pane sashes in the side bays and on the first floor of the central gable, and 12-pane sashes at ground floor level in the centre. Flat-topped roof extensions with 12-pane sashes flank the central gable. A tall central ridge stack has projecting through-stones. The stone gable copings are now covered with pebble-dash, but triple footstones are exposed. Doorways are located on both returns, within low pent sections. Side gables have three windows below and two above, with a gabled hoodmould over the central window and a slit vent in the gable peak. A flat-roofed dormer extends across the rear elevation. The interior has not been inspected.
