Description

Langton Hall is a house built around 1770, which was altered and enlarged between 1850 and 1860, and restored to its 18th-century proportions with a new front in 1960. It was constructed for Leonard Smelt, who served as sub-governor to George IV. The building is made of red brick in Flemish bond and features roofs covered with Westmorland slate.

The main house has two storeys and a basement, with a layout of three bays, one bay, and three bays, where the outer bays are canted. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, set under flat brick arches. A central stone staircase leads up to a 20th-century glazed door that has an overlight and side-lights, topped by a 20th-century Venetian window with a brick arch above it. There is a dentilled brick course and a 19th-century parapet with a machicolated design. The roof is flipped with ridge stacks.

Each side elevation features a large bow window that extends the full height of the house. The loggias, which date from the 20th century, are supported by Roman Doric columns on plinths, with a frieze and cornice above. The gabled side wings are two storeys tall and consist of eight bays, with three-light casements and pediments, along with ridge stacks. The interior has not been inspected.
