Description

Burton House is a house with an attached barn and outbuilding, likely dating from the 17th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof. The east-facing elevation is two storeys high and two bays wide, with a gable end of the barn to the south and a single-bay outbuilding to the north. A dripcourse runs above the ground-floor windows. The windows are casement type. A gabled porch with rounded angles features at the central entrance. There are two squat, cross-axial chimneys. The outbuilding has an entrance, a window, and a loading door. The south elevation includes a ramp leading up to the barn entrance, which has a pentice roof. A gabled wing extends to the west, and a lower lean-to outshut is located to the east. The interior was not inspected but is reported to contain an original panelled partition. The barn incorporates a loading door. Historical records, as noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments Inventory for Westmorland, provide further details.
