Description

Bunkers Hill is a farmhouse with adjoining barns and byres, built to commemorate the Battle of Bunkers Hill during the American War of Independence, as noted on the front wall with the inscription "BUNKERS HILL JUNE 17TH 1775." Constructed in the late 18th century for the 11th Duke of Norfolk, who supported the American cause, the building features pink sandstone ashlar walls with string courses and a battlemented parapet, along with V-jointed quoins. The roof is made of sloping graduated greenslate, and there are banded ashlar chimney stacks, some of which are made of 20th-century brick.

The barns and byres are made of dressed red sandstone with raised quoins, topped with graduated greenslate roofs that have coped gables and kneelers. The house has a canted-in front that is 2½ storeys high and consists of three bays, flanked by lower contemporary barns, creating a rough overall U-shape. It features pointed-arched sash windows with glazing bars, some of which are double, as well as smaller similar attic windows. The parapet has an inscription above a carved lion. The flanking barns contain large central pointed-arched cart entrances with alternate-block surrounds; the barn to the left of the house has a large casement window with glazing bars. The barns also have rear plank doorways and casement windows in stone surrounds. Additionally, there are large 20th-century sliding doors, blocked loft doorways, and a pent extension. Bunkers Hill is one of a group of three farmhouse follies in the Greystoke area.
