Description

A terrace of workers' housing dating to around 1896. The buildings are constructed of red brick with graduated slate and composition tile roofs. The terrace comprises two storeys, with paired windows on each floor for each house, and paired doorways. Each house has a door with a plain overlight; projecting sills and brick mullions feature on the windows (although the ground-floor mullions have been removed from numbers 3, 5, 17, and 19). Decorative terracotta panels are positioned above each pair of doorways, except for numbers 1 and 3. Numbers 13, 33, and 35 retain their original six-panel doors and plain sash windows. An eaves corbel table is present, and remnants of cast-iron, ogee guttering remain on one of the houses. Party-wall ridge stacks are visible. The terrace was built on the site of a former parade ground, representing a later extension of the planned housing developed in the mid-19th century to the southwest of Duke Street. Building plans for the terrace were submitted in 1896.
