Description
The Church of St John is a church built in 1837, with a tower added in 1869, designed by George Webster. It is constructed from stone rubble with slobbered mortar, roughcast on the south facade, and features ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The church consists of a nave, a west tower, and an east apse. The five-bay nave includes weathered and diagonal buttresses, while the lancet windows have splayed reveals. The gabled south porch features a pointed entrance and a datestone marking the year 1837. The gables are coped and adorned with fleuron finials. The gabled apse has flanking lancets and three stepped lancets. The tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and has three stepped lancets under a hoodmould on the west face, with two lancets in a two-bay applied arcade above. The bell stage includes a sill course and two-light louvred plate-tracery bell openings with hoodmoulds and head stops, along with a string course featuring gargoyles and a stepped embattled parapet.
Inside, the ceiling is supported by braced beams and pendants, and features three traceried roses. The tower arch has a traceried glazed screen and flanking diagonal buttresses, and there is a small octagonal font. The windows at the east end have hoods with head stops, which appear to be plaster casts of faces. The splayed arch to the apse has roll moulding and shafts, and the east window contains stained glass dated 1892. The pulpit features open cusped arches.
