Description
Temple Sowerby House is a house that has been converted into a hotel, featuring a 'U'-shaped plan and built in two main periods. The earlier section at the rear, dated 1727, has a pebble-dashed front with a plinth, quoins, and a first-floor band. It has a graduated slate roof with brick end chimneys. The two-storey, two-bay front includes two stone mullioned three-light windows and a fire window on the ground floor, with two later sash windows above that have glazing bars and stone surrounds. A range connects this part of the building to the later house and includes an original cross-passage door with a dated lintel.
The main house, built in the late 18th century to early 19th century, features Flemish bond brickwork with rusticated quoins. It has a moulded stone plinth and eaves, and a Welsh slate roof with stone copings and corniced end chimneys. The symmetrical two-storey, five-bay front has a central panelled door set in a pedimented stone architrave, now enclosed by a 20th-century gabled brick porch. There are two sashes on either side of the door and five above, all with glazing bars in stone architraves. In the 19th century, a single-storey canted bay window in brick was added at the south end, along with a two-storey coach-house in ashlar at the north end. Internally, extensive repairs and renovations have restored much of the original appearance of the interior.
