Description

The Plague Stone is located in the grounds of Greengarth Old People's Home. It is possibly an old cross base that was placed near Eamont Bridge at the entrance to the town in 1598. This stone was historically used for the transfer of coin between town and country people. Currently, it serves as a sculptural feature. The stone is made of whinstone and measures 2 feet 6 inches by 2 feet by 1 foot 6 inches. It has stopped chamfers at the angles and a square recess on the top.
