Description
Duke's Bridge over the Kendal/Lancaster Canal, located 170 meters east-north-east of Townend Farm, is a canal bridge built around 1816. It was likely designed by engineer John Fletcher, based on the original designs of John Rennie, whose canal route was authorized in 1792. The bridge is constructed from squared, coursed limestone, featuring a limestone string and copings, as well as a rounded fender course. It has an elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs and a keystone spanning the canal and towpath, along with a smaller arch with similar details for a cattle creep to the east. The shallow-arched parapets are curved in plan and extend into retaining walls that are finished with pilasters. There are steps leading up to the roadway at the south-west corner, and the bridge is approximately 6 meters wide between the parapets. This bridge is a particularly fine example along this section of the canal and is named after the Duke of Cumberland Public House, which used to be located at the crossroads to the east.
