Description
Hutton Roof War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1920, located in the churchyard of St John’s Church in Hutton Roof, Cumbria. It is prominently placed near the churchyard wall in the south-east corner, making it visible from the main road. The memorial consists of a rough, natural limestone monolith approximately 1.8 meters high, which is unworked except for a relief-carved plain cross on the front and a smoothed face for the inscription below. The inscription panel features the dedication and names of the fallen in incised and blacked lettering. It reads: "ERECTED BY THE/ PARISHIONERS OF/ HUTTON ROOF/ IN MEMORY OF/ (NAMES)/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN/ THE CAUSE OF JUSTICE AND RIGHT/ “THEY SHALL RISE AGAIN”/ 1914 – 1918."
