Description
Plumpton Hall is a farmhouse built in the late 16th century for the Musgrave family, with significant alterations made in the 19th century. The building features cement rendered walls constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and is topped with a 20th-century graduated greenslate roof, which includes rebuilt red sandstone chimney stacks. The farmhouse is two storeys high and originally consists of a two-bay house, flanked by lower wings added in the 19th century.
The entrance is marked by an off-centre 20th-century glazed door set within a 19th-century painted stone surround. The windows are a mix of irregular sash and casement styles, all framed in 19th-century painted stone surrounds. Notably, there is a 16th-century window on the upper floor with two round-headed lights beneath a hoodmould, as well as a blocked 16th-century chamfered attic window. The wings feature various 20th-century windows, also in 19th-century painted stone surrounds.
At the rear, there is another 16th-century window with three round-headed lights and a blocked attic window from the same period. The rest of the rear facade includes 20th-century windows in both 19th and 20th-century surrounds. The right wing of the building has been converted into a stable, featuring a blocked segmental arch and external stone steps leading to a loft doorway. The interior has undergone alterations over time. Plumpton Hall was also historically referred to as Plumpton Head Hall. Additional barn extensions and 20th-century rear garages are not considered of interest.
