Description
Lowther Castle Inn and former stables is a public house and stable building. The left part of the structure is dated 1717, while the stables were built in the late 18th century. The building features painted incised stucco walls beneath a partly hipped graduated greenslate roof, which includes incised stucco chimney stacks. The stables have painted rendered walls and a graduated greenslate roof with roughcast chimney stacks.
The inn is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with a single-bay extension on the left and a higher two-storey, three-bay section for the stables on the right. There is an off-centre 20th-century door in a painted stone surround with a dated lintel, flanked by canted bay windows with glazing bars. The building also has sash windows with glazing bars in painted stone surrounds. The left side features a 20th-century door leading up steps, a plain opening, and a canted bay window. The extension includes another door and sash windows in painted stone surrounds. The stables have plank doors beneath sash windows with glazing bars, while the right domestic part has a 20th-century door and windows in painted stone surrounds.
