Description
The George Hotel, along with Nos 19, 20, and 22, is a building of special architectural interest located on Devonshire Street. It has various dates of construction, primarily from the early 18th century, mid-19th century, and 1924. The building is made of red sandstone ashlar and is notable for its historical significance, as Prince Charles Edward Stuart stayed here on November 22, 1745.
The northern part of the hotel is the oldest section, featuring three storeys with a central carriage entry adorned with a cornice and a curved pediment. This section is flanked by small shop fronts at Nos 19 and 20. Above these shops, there are six sash windows on each floor, framed by stone architraves, topped with a moulded cornice.
To the south, the main front, dating from the mid-19th century, rises four storeys and includes a central Roman Doric porch with a cornice and a stone balustraded balcony. On either side of the porch are two-storeyed canted bay windows with stone mullions, and the central sash window is set within moulded architraves that also feature cornices. The second floor has triple sash windows, while the top floor is distinguished by two semi-circular eyes.
A significant addition was made to the southern portion of the building in 1924, which is designed in a similar style. This section has three storeys, with a central segmental arch leading to a market hall, a small shop window at No 22, and five windows on each upper floor, including a triple sash with a pediment on the first floor.
