Description
The Church of St Cuthbert is a Grade II* listed church located in Kirkby Ireleth, with a nave and chancel dating back to the 12th century and an early 16th-century north aisle that was originally built as a chantry chapel. The church underwent significant restoration in the 1880s, and it features a west tower constructed in 1829. The building is made of stone rubble with dressed quoins and ashlar dressings, topped with slate roofs.
The three-bay nave includes two-light traceried windows and rainwater heads from 1864. There is a gabled porch with a pointed opening, and the inner doorway, dating from around 1170, has two orders adorned with waterleaf capitals and beak-head mouldings. The gable over the chancel is decorated with slate hanging. The north aisle is also gabled and features a three-light east window and a two-light west window. The north elevation has a straight-headed window with three ogee-headed lights in the first bay, a similar two-light window in the third bay, a two-light hollow-chamfered-mullioned window in the second bay, and a trefoil-headed light in the fourth bay. The chancel boasts an elliptical-headed east window with five lights and Perpendicular tracery, which has a hood with one head stop. The south side of the chancel includes a Y-tracery window, an entrance, and a window with three ogee-headed lights, while the north side features a similar two-light window and a small round-headed light.
Inside, the church has a three-bay arcade and a timber-framed chancel arch with tracery panels. The roofs are collar and tie-beam. There are some 14th-century stained glass pieces, including a bust of Christ and a Cross in the chancel windows. The chancel also has a blocked south light and 18th-century paintings of Moses and Aaron. The font is of goblet type with roll mouldings on the arrises, and there is a blocked squint between the aisle and chancel. Bequest boards can be found in the porch.
