Description

The Grange is a house with an adjoining domestic wing, dated 1817, located in Temple Sowerby. The house is constructed of coursed, squared rubble with a plinth and rusticated quoins, topped by an eaves cornice and low parapet. The roof is graduated slate with stone copings, a mid-ridge, and end chimneys. The front of the house is symmetrical, with three bays. It features a central panelled door beneath a traceried semicircular fanlight, sheltered by an open porch supported on unfluted Ionic columns and an entablature. Tall sash windows flank the door, with three more sashes above. Two-storey bay windows, semicircular in plan, extend from either end of the rear elevation, which has a first-floor sill band. Ground-floor sashes are accented by cornices resting on consoles.

The domestic wing, built at a right angle to the north end of the main house, also bears the date 1817. It is constructed of similar coursed, squared rubble with rusticated quoins and moulded eaves, and has a hipped, graduated slate roof with a stone end chimney. The side facing the house has one window on each floor. The rear of the wing was significantly altered in the late 20th century.
