Description

This building, located at 1 New Crown Yard, is a house that was formerly two dwellings. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations over time. It is situated at right angles to 2 South Quay, which was built in 1785, suggesting that this structure was erected shortly thereafter.

The elevation facing Bridge Street does not have any doors and features walls made of rendered cobble and rubble sandstone. The roof is covered with Cumbrian blue slate laid in diminishing courses. The building is three storeys high and has four bays. The design is symmetrical, with the central bays showcasing 12-paned sash windows on both the ground and first floors, although the right-hand window on the first floor has been enlarged. The second floor has small mock sashes located under the eaves. Each outer bay contains a 6-pane (3 over 3) sash window on the ground floor. Most of the sashes appear to be original and lack horns.

On the yard elevation, there are 20th-century rooflights. The ground floor features a 6-panelled door on the right, flanked by two 12-paned vertically sliding sashes of different sizes and a small 4-paned sash on the left. The first floor also has two 12-paned sashes of varying sizes, while the second floor has two small mock sashes under the eaves. Additionally, there is a further 12-paned sash window on the extreme left between the ground and first floors. The yard elevation retains an original working gas lamp attached to the wall. This building has group value with the Naval Club, Nos. 15 and 16 Bridge Street, and the properties on South Quay.
