Description

The former Priory wall for the Priory of St Mary in Carlisle now serves as part of the Deanery garden wall. It dates from the 12th or 13th century and has undergone extensive later repairs and rebuilding. The oldest sections are made of squared red sandstone blocks and do not have a plinth, while the Victorian repairs are constructed of brick and are partly coped. The wall runs parallel to the West City Walls and is adjacent to the northwest end of the Deanery. A section of the wall is medieval and features a blocked rounded arch doorway. The wall turns into a higher brick section at right angles along Dean Tait's Lane, connecting with the Abbey Gate. The lane was widened in 1851, which may date the brick wall.
