Description
Orchard Cottage and Barford Cottage are two cottages dating from the early 18th century, with 19th-century alterations. They likely incorporate part of an earlier house, as evidenced by a reused lintel built into the left return wall, which bears weathered initials, a wheel, and the year 1662 (or 1667). The cottages have roughcast walls and are topped with a graduated greenslate roof featuring roughcast chimney stacks.
The building is two storeys high and consists of two bays for Barford Cottage on the left and four bays for Orchard Cottage on the right, all under a common roof. Orchard Cottage has a plank door with a 20th-century wooden porch, and it features sash windows with glazing bars set in 19th-century painted stone surrounds. Barford Cottage has a 20th-century door framed by a weathered stone architrave, with sash windows set in blind segmental arches. According to the owner, Barford Cottage was originally stables, and Orchard Cottage was divided into two.
