Description
The Mansion is a house and adjoining former servants' quarters dating to around 1805, built for the Harris family. It is constructed of rusticated and incised stucco, with an eaves cornice, blocking course, and angle pilasters. The roof is of graduated greenslate with incised stucco chimney stacks. The main facade is two storeys and nine bays wide, with a lower two-storey, four-bay adjoining house. A prostyle Tuscan porch shelters early 20th-century glazed double doors. Sash windows with glazing bars are set in painted stone surrounds. The rear facade, facing Main Street, has a panelled door within a pilastered doorcase, flanked by stained-glass windows, and further sash windows with glazing bars in painted stone surrounds.
The interior features moulded plaster ceilings in each room and panelled shutters to each window, along with panelled doors. A built-in datestone in the hall is inscribed "R. & A.H., I.H. 1662" and is believed to be from a previous house on the site. The adjoining house at No. 20 has a facade to the street and features a panelled door and sash windows in painted stone surrounds. A further adjoining house, No. 18, is part of the same property but is not of architectural interest.
