Description

Scalegill Hall is a large house dating from the 17th century, with some ruined outbuildings said to be dated 1615, and it features later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of rendered rubble and has a graduated slate roof with stone copings and kneelers, along with rendered stepped chimneys located at one end and in the middle. The house has outshuts at the rear and is designed in a 'T' plan, consisting of two storeys.

The front of the house facing the farmyard shows changes in the wall surface, indicating that three bays were refronted and the roof was raised. These bays present a symmetrical elevation with a central plank door framed by a decoratively carved lugged and corniced architrave, flanked by single sashes in stone surrounds. On the first floor, there are two sashes in architraves that were originally mullioned and transomed, with a moulded oval frame between them, likely intended for a datestone, which is now rendered over. To the right, there are two bays with a window inserted where a former door was located, and a two-light mullioned window on the left has a sash in a stone surround above it.

The current door in the lower range connecting the house to the barn has steps leading up to a loft door on the right. All sashes feature glazing bars. A ground floor room to the right of the refronted section has a large, moulded, semicircular arch leading to a former kitchen fire-recess. The adjoining barn is built at right angles and is made of coursed rubble with quoins, topped by a 20th-century concrete-tiled roof. It has a central wagon door with added cheeks, flanked by two rows of vent slits, along with a 20th-century plank door and window on the right, and a blocked mullioned window at the rear.
